Business Intelligence in Russia: Is Your Business Partner Really Trustworthy?
How to protect yourself against "ghost companies" and fraud risks in the Russian market? INN check, debt collection, and RFCONS's on-site verification methods.
While doing business with Russia offers great opportunities, it also carries significant risks if you don't work with the right partner. One of the most frequent complaints we receive is: "The website was very professional, they spoke wonderfully on the phone, but after sending the deposit, we can't reach them."
At RFCONS, we are obligated to ensure not only the goods but also the commercial security of our clients. So, how do we determine if a Russian company is trustworthy? Here is our 3-stage "Check-Up" system.
1. The Identification Number (INN) Tells Everything
Every company in Russia has an INN (Tax Number) and OGRN (Registration Number) code. These numbers are the DNA of the company. A company may present its name in a fancy way, but it cannot hide its INN number. Our first step is to examine the company's status in state records:
• Is the company actually active, or is it in liquidation? • When was it established? (If a company established yesterday is trying to sell millions of dollars worth of goods today, alarm bells should ring).
2. Digital Registry Scan (Debt and Court Records)
In Russia, due to transparency laws, companies' court histories and tax debts are kept in specific databases. With the professional software we use (Spark-Interfax, Kontur.Focus, etc.), we can see:
• Does the company have any unpaid tax debts? • Has it been previously sued by other suppliers for "fraud" or "non-payment"? • Is the company owner on a "Blacklist"?
This scan reveals the unseen part of the iceberg.
3. The RFCONS Difference: "On-Site" Physical Verification
Digital data may appear clean. But sometimes fraudsters can conduct transactions by purchasing a clean company record. This is where our field force comes in.
Thanks to our headquarters being in Russia;
• We can physically visit the factory or office address declared by the company.
• We can see on-site the answer to the question, "Is this a factory or just a post office box?"
• If necessary, we can show you the production line live via video conference.
Conclusion: Trust Does Not Preclude Control
As the Russian proverb says: "Trust, but verify" (Doveryay, no proveryay). Don't leave your business to chance. Find out who your buyer or supplier in Russia is before sending your money.
